It’s amazing how the mind can be so active when the body is so exhausted.
While attempting to go to sleep, if you are like me, you are replaying moments of the day in your head and strategizing tomorrow. If this is the case, restful sleep is nearly impossible. Here are some of my most effective strategies when I need to sleep well.
First, have a clutter free room. Let your bedroom be an oasis. If that’s done and you still can’t sleep try my method. I get out of bed when the first signs of tossing and turning start and believe me I don’t want to. Then I write a list with pen and paper whatever in on my mind.
Sometimes I will make lists of ideas for a job, a section for meal planning, a to-do list of sorts. It is messy, I don’t care, I scribble fast. I feel relieved because my cluttered thoughts are now organized down on paper.
I choose not to use any electrical devices for writing or browsing at this time. I do however play my classical music. And put on lavender essential oil atomizer. Remake your bed if it doesn’t seem right, fix pillows and flatten and tuck sheets. I’m like the princess and the pea. I find the weight of the blanket has to be just right. Having an excellent pillow is a worthwhile investment. Comfort is king.
So now that your mind has been unloaded and your body is settled for the moment. What is next? Focusing on long and slow breathing, in one nostril and out the out the other for a count of 100, if you get that far without falling asleep.
